The De La Salle Dispatch
10 October 2008

Ladies’ Luncheon at the Aegean Cove
Sunday – 2 November 2008 – 12:30 to 3:00 PM
Academic Fair 87 Pine Street, Freeport

Tidings From Brother Thomas

This past Wednesday marked the first meeting of the Board of Trustees for this academic year.  The members accessed the building via our new entryway and convened in the multipurpose room, configured to serve the purpose of a meeting venue.  After the opening prayer Mrs. Boniello, Ms. Hattauer, Mr. Rall, and I each led small groups of Trustees on a tour of the space we now lease from Our Holy Redeemer Parish.  Everyone was impressed by the clean, bright, and spacious rooms and buoyed by the pastor’s promise of new windows.  Comments such as “this is great space,” “I’m glad we can implement a lock down if necessary,” and “we have come a long way in six years” were among those I heard.

I invite all readers of this Dispatch to see our new space as well.  You are welcome at any time, but I especially encourage you to come on Sunday, 2 November between 12:30 PM and 3:00 PM.  At that that time we will host an Academic Fair showcasing our students’ work.  Our young men will be present to give tours and discuss their experiences of The De La Salle School.  For those who are unable to visit on weekdays when classes are in session, this is an ideal time to come on campus.  Plan to stop in and please bring guests with you!

Ladies’ Luncheon Update

Join the more than two dozen women already signed up for a fabulous afternoon at the Aegean Cove in Astoria.  Delicious food, complimentary wine, a jewelry trunk show (at 15 percent off) featuring the exclusive designs of Alex and Lee of California (www.alexandlee.com), and a special guest appearance by author Amy Holman Edelman who will read from her best-selling novel “Manless in Montclair” are all on the agenda. Signed copies of Amy’s book will be presented to each guest along with gorgeous goody bags donated by Christo Fifth Avenue in New York. A beautiful collection of raffle prizes will also be awarded.
Ticket price for the luncheon is $75 and raffle tickets are $20 each or three for $50. All proceeds from this event (including 20 percent of all jewelry sales) will benefit the Field Trip Fund for the students of The De La Salle School. Writer of the Week

The students of Mrs. Nancy Hirsh’s English Language Arts classes are learning about personal narratives.  They were asked to personify a “sea find” (found by Mrs. Hirsch at Davis Park on Fire Island) providing the history of the item and how it found its way to the beach. Here is eighth grader Brian Soares’ essay.
I am a crystal.  I look as soft as a cloud on the top, but I am as rough as a bull on the bottom.  I am shaped like Texas
.  I shine like the sun in the big blue sky.  If you see me I am a little crystal.  My color is light blue with a little pinch of green in me.  I am cool, not hot or warm.  My color is the reason I am cool.
I was created by nature near the Amazon River in South America
in a cave.  One day I was found by an archeologist who freed me from a wall in the cave and took me to a museum.  A large crowd of people would come to look at me.  I was not upset, but still sad because I was far from my home where nature created me.
One night a thief came in and stole me.  He threw me onto the beach which was much colder than any place I had ever been before.  Then Mrs. Hirsch came and picked me up.  She was excited to find me and I was happy to see her pick me up.  She then brought me to school and placed me in a bin where other students could study me in the future.
