Tidings From Brother Thomas

The sixth year of The De La Salle School’s existence has been an extraordinary one. We stabilized the administrative structure, graduated a fine Class of 2008, enjoyed an amazingly successful gala, introduced a well-received extended day program, crossed the $600K line in total donations received, hosted a diverse group of professionals who shared information about their careers with our eighth graders, and are anticipating a record enrollment for the upcoming school year. It has been a fantastic team effort and God has indeed blessed us. Thank you for being a part of this great adventure!

At the conclusion of this school year we bid farewell to Brother Richard Lalime, FSC and to Mr. Jorge Mejía. Brother Richard, a member of the founding faculty of The De La Salle School, will be teaching religion to ninth graders at St. Raymond’s High School for Boys in the Bronx. Mr. Mejía, one of our Lasallian Volunteers this past year, is returning to California where the weather is warmer and he will pursue graduate studies. We are grateful to each of these men for their service to our school.

We have negotiated a five year lease with Our Holy Redeemer Parish and will relinquish some areas of the building we previously occupied and acquire the use of some additional space in the same structure. This partial relocation will provide us with additional space, a more secure environment, newer classrooms, student lavatories within the confines of our corridors, and a more visible and inviting entrance. During the summer we will be making the transition with the installation of new computer cables and phone wires and the acquisition of some new furniture. An additional expense is incurred because of this change but our Board of Trustees and the current staff agree our program will be enhanced.

Students’ Outlook Expanded

In addition to their full schedule of academic subjects, physical education, art, and music, our eighth grade students had the opportunity to learn about careers and the world around them via field trips and a series of visits by nine professionals.

Some of the highlights included interactive discussions with Mr. Donald Regan, Senior Vice President at Lehman Brothers and Mr. Frank Coleman, Executive Vice President of Christian Brothers Investment Services (finance); Dr. Lincoln Ferguson, MD, a Pediatric and Emergency Services physician at South Nassau Communities Hospital and Dr. Alan Rosen, DDS (health care); Mr. Eon Smith, Esq. at Smith Combie Law Group and District Court Judge Fran Ricigliano (law); Mr. David Ochoa of The Resource Group, Inc. (communication); Mr. Roberto Nicolia, President and CEO of Nicolock Paving Stones & Retaining Walls (business); Mr. James Larkins, Social Worker from Martin de Porres Group Homes (social work); and Br. Peter Kolbe, FSC, Head of St. Mary’s High School, Nyeri, Kenya (education and religious vocation); and trips to LaGuardia Airport to try out their flight simulator and South Nassau Communities Hospital to learn about the variety of careers available in a hospital setting.

As The De La Salle School’s Class of 2008 left their familiar halls at 87 Pine Street in Freeport for the broader horizons of high schools across Long Island, we believe these trips and visits have demonstrated how their academic efforts now will reap many rewards in their future.
