Tidings From Brother Thomas
Our Dean of Student Life, Kevin Rall, and I recently completed home visits to the families of the twelve young men who have already signed up for our incoming fifth grade class in September. Each youngster has a unique living situation that gives us some insights into where he is coming from and who is around to support him.We see where he does his homework and we find out how many people share a bedroom with him.(The record in this class thus far is four, his parents and his two younger brothers!) We have received a gracious welcome in each house or apartment and it is a great start to building a strong partnership between home and school.Ten of the twelve youngsters who will be joining us in September informed us that what they were most looking forward to about their experience at The De La Salle School was “making new friends.” The other two cited “making new friends” as the thing they were most concerned about. It sounds like we have an honest group of young men eager to work well with one another!
At present we have one other potential fifth grader whose candidacy is under consideration and we have seats open for two more applicants in that class. The other three classes are already full.We are on target for a record enrollment at The De La Salle School in September.
Students Say Thank You
As part of The De La Salle School’s language arts studies this year, every student wrote a letter to the donor who is their Student Sponsor or to Brother Thomas. Their assignment was to thank their donor and answer several questions: what were they most proud of this year, how had their life changed by attending The De La Salle School, and what was their goal for next year. English language arts teacher, Mrs. Nancy Hirsch, worked closely with the students – editing their first drafts, encouraging them to write legibly and in script (!), and instructing them how to properly address the envelopes. This was an important life-skill exercise – learning how to recognize and acknowledge the generosity of others. Here is the first of several excerpts from these letters. “This year I learned how to be more of a leader and to study more.Because of that, I made it on to the Honor Roll. This year I also learned how to be more of a Christian and a gentleman which really helps outside of school. The De La Salle School helped change my life because it showed me how to respect others. This school taught me how to read books on a higher grade level.Because of this school I will be going to a great high school (BishopLoughlinMemorialHigh School boarding program)”-- Darian Brewster, Class of 2008.
The De La Salle School Hosts 25th Class Reunion! The 25th reunion of Our HolyRedeemerElementary School’s Class of 1983, that is!
Yes, 13 of these former eighth graders, two of their teachers, and more than 25 of their parents, friends, spouses, and children gathered on Sunday, 29 June for brunch and a tour of “their” school. This was the last event in a weekend-long celebration organized by Theresa Recce (nee Thompson) and her committee. With the sound of the old school bell tolling, there were cries of “This was the nurse’s office!” and “The cafeteria didn’t look anything like this!” Welcomed “back to school” by Brother Thomas, everyone was glad to hear about the mission of The De La Salle School and to learn that Catholic school education is once more alive and well at 87 Pine Street in Freeport.
