Tidings from Brother Thomas
I am a De La Salle Gentleman.I dream big.At the end of assembly every morning, just before we all recite the Pledge of Allegiance, our students acclaim a series of affirmations.Among them are the two with which I began this paragraph.
It seemed appropriate as we commemorated Martin Luther King and referenced his famous speech that our students be invited to articulate their dreams. This writing exercise was placed in a context of a prayer service where the message of God through the prophet Jeremiah and the words of Jesus Christ guided the students' reflection.Jeremiah noted that God's plans for us are for our benefit not our woe (cf. Jer. 29:11).John's Gospel account quotes Jesus' intention that we experience life in its fullness (cf. Jn. 10:10).
Over the course of several subsequent morning assemblies the teachers in turn read the anonymous words of our students.A sampling of what we all heard follows.
A dream that I have for myself is to become a professional soccer player and help my family with any problems they have.
A dream that I have for myself is peace on earth for ever and ever.
A dream that I have for myself is to be an artist and show my drawings in a museum.
A dream that I have for myself is to get 90s on my report card so when I am older I can go to a good college to become a doctor.
A dream that I have for myself is to stop being lazy.
A dream that I have for myself is that all children will be able to get along instead of being enemies.
A dream that I have for myself is to be President of the United States.
A dream that I have for myself is to succeed in life and give back to everyone that helped me.I would also like to get involved more often instead of staying home playing games.
A dream that I have for myself is to find a cure for some types of illnesses like some cancers.
A dream that I have for myself is to be a mechanic and fix cars.
A dream that I have for myself is to live my life and do good in everything I do each day.
A dream that I have for myself is to go to college and start my own company, or enter the military, or become a lawyer.
A dream that I have for myself is to graduate from here, high school, from college, then get a good job in my future and donate back to the school.
A dream that I have for myself is that I want my mom and dad and sister and brother to be a family again.
A dream that I have for myself is to be successful and wealthy not only with money but also wealthy with love and intelligence.
Join me in proclaiming Amen to all these dreams...and know, too, that another one of our daily affirmations is I work hard to achieve my dreams.
